During this 5-week workshop, we will explore the ideas of city and citizenry while generating new work. Optional excursions, in-class writing exercises, discussions, and close readings of participant work and that of diverse writers on these topics will inform the ways we attend to the craft of poetic form and breaking out of old writing habits. We will also consider the role of the poet as citizen and artist. Our goals will be to establish a positive environment for producing poems, learn from critical feedback, and participate in a supportive, creative, and observant community. Expect to leave the workshop with at least 5 new poems.
